Recently, the right has been in a tizzy over George Soros's open - up front - donations to liberal causes. Well, although I find it distasteful mentioning Mr. Soros in the same breath as Moon, the comparison is NOT close, but maybe this can show the conservatives what hypocrites they are. Moon has been funding and guiding the right for a couple decades, but have you ever heard O'reilly say anything about this? When are conservatives going to go on FOX and bow down and pay homage to their 'savior' Moon?

His empire is spending big money trying to win favor with conservatives.
More tolerance. Through this method of recruiting, the church has established a network of affiliated organizations and connections in almost every conservative organization in Washington, including the Heritage Foundation, the largest of the conservative think tanks and an important source of government personnel during the Reagan administration. Although Heritage officials deny it, the foundation has dramatically changed its policy toward the Unification Church. In the early 80's the foundation, wary of the church's aims, prohibited staff or fellows from being associated with Unification Church organizations or taking money from the church or church-financed institutions.
As the Washington Times has become the voice of capital conservatives, the Heritage Foundation has become far more tolerant of church ties. The foundation accepts the participation of Lichenstein and other senior fellows in church-funded enterprises and allows its staff members to go to church conferences.
The Unification Church's newfound influence has occasioned intense debate among conservatives. One group of worried young conservatives meets regularly in private to compare notes about the problem. But little of the debate has surfaced in public forums. "Most people are afraid to address the issue because they don't want to publicize the extent of the church's involvement," says Amy Moritz of the Conservative National Center for Public Policy Research.
Because almost all conservative organizations in Washington have some ties to the church, conservatives also fear repercussions if they expose the church's role. That happened when one organization, the Capital Research Center, published a newsletter last November warning of the church's attempt to create a "centralized world theocracy." One of its board members, who was also on the board of the International Security Council, resigned in protest, and conservatives charging that the paper was creating discord on the right, besieged the center with angry calls. "We got a very, very strong reaction -- almost as if we were the enemy -- because we raised the issue," says CRC Chairman Willa Johnson, a former president of the Heritage Foundation. Though historically an ardent anticommunist, Moon negotiated a business deal in 1991 with Kim Il Sung, the longtime communist leader, the DIA documents said.
The deal called for construction of a hotel complex in Pyongyang as well as a new Holy Land at the site of Moon's birth in North Korea, one document said. The DIA said the deal sprang from a face-to-face meeting between Moon and Kim Il Sung in North Korea from Nov. 30 to Dec. 8, 1991.
These talks took place secretly, without the knowledge of the South Korean government, the DIA wrote on Feb. 2, 1994. ÒIn the original deal with Kim (Il Sung), Moon paid several tens of million dollars as a down-payment into an overseas account, the DIA said in a cable dated Aug. 14, 1994.
The DIA said Moon's organization also delivered money to Kim Il Sung's son and successor, Kim Jong Il.
In 1993, the Unification Church sold a piece of property located in Pennsylvania, the DIA reported on Sept. 9, 1994. ÒThe profit on the sale, approximately $3 million was sent through a bank in China to the Hong Kong branch of the KS (South Korean) company Samsung Group. The money was later presented to Kim Jung Il (Kim Jong Il) as a birthday present.
After Kim Il Sung's death in 1994 and his succession by his son, Kim Jong Il, Moon dispatched his longtime aide, Bo Hi Pak, to ensure that the business deals were still on track with Kim Jong Il Òand his coterie, the DIA reported.

Nobody in the United States was supposed to be providing funding to anybody in North Korea, period, under the Treasury (Department's) sanction regime, said Jonathan Winer, former deputy assistant secretary of state handling international crime.
The U.S. embargo of North Korea dates back to the Korean War. The Washington Times did not note that its founder - who continues to subsidize the newspaper with tens of millions of dollars a year - had defied a U.S. trade embargo aimed at containing the military ambitions of North Korea.
By supplying money at a time when North Korea was desperate for hard currency, Moon helped deliver the means for the communist state to advance exactly the strategic threat that MoonÕs newspaper now says will require billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to thwart.
That money bought Moon influence inside North Korea. It is less clear how much influence Moon and his associates will have inside a George W. Bush White House, given Moon's longstanding -- though little known -- support for the Bush family.

Allen Tate Wood, testified that in his view the UC was not a church at all: "It is my contention that it is certainly not a church. Another ex-member said that her experience in the church led her to believe that Moon intended to make UC members into "a little political army."
The opinion rendered by the New York Tax Commission in denying tax-exemption for certain UC properties stated: "although the applicant association does in certain aspects bespeak of a religious association, it is in our opinion so threaded with political motives and activities that it requires us to deny its application." It is also interesting to note that Moon himself saw danger in linking politics to his spiritual movement. In relation to the anti-Communist ideology, Moon said:
"One thing that makes it difficult for us to advance full-stream. (sic) is that we cannot quite proclaim our movement as a church on the foundation of the V.O.C. (Victory Over Communism) ideology * * * We must, at any cost, let the people know that Unified Thought, our philosophy, is based on our theological doctrine. Otherwise, we cannot connect the V.O.C. movement with our church movement."
In 1974, while preparing his followers for a demonstration at the U.N. against withdrawal of troops from South Korea Moon said:
"You must remember that you should not be saying anything in political terms. You must say, "We are not concerned about political things. We are not doing this for political reasons, but out of humanitarian motivation."

Craig, who was one of the first ministers in our region to take down the cross, about how spiritually he received many directions about how to perform the ceremony in his church. He also replaced an image of the flag over all the places where crosses were hung or present in his church. Bishop Craig also had a dream that a cross was struck down off the top of a church by lightning, before we told him about the cross on the chapel at Barrytown. He sincerely encouraged the other ministers to make every effort to go to Jerusalem, even if they borrow the money from the bank.
Next testimony was from Bishop Frank Kirkwood of the New Covenant Fellowship Ministries in Birmingham AL, who shared how his church congregation has tripled in size since taking down the cross on August 17th.

Dark Side of Rev. Moon: Hooking George Bush
Bush then held up the colorful new newspaper and complimented several articles, including one flattering piece about Barbara Bush. Bush's speech was so effusive that it surprised even Moon's followers.
"Once again, heaven turned a disappointment into a victory," the Unification News exulted. "Everyone was delighted to hear his compliments. We knew he would give an appropriate and 'nice' speech, but praise in Father's presence was more than we expected. ... It was vindication. We could just hear a sigh of relief from Heaven."
Bush's endorsement of The Washington Times' editorial independence also was not truthful. Almost since it opened in 1982, a string of senior editors and correspondents have resigned, citing the manipulation of the news by Moon and his subordinates. Perhaps even more remarkable, the Reagan administration showed greater respect for Moon's constitutional rights than those of some U.S. citizens. Starting in 1981, the FBI cooperated with one of Moon's front groups during a five-year nationwide investigation of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), a domestic organization critical of Reagan's policies in Central America, according to FBI documents cited by The Boston Globe. In 1981, the FBI began collecting reports from Moon's Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) which was spying on CISPES supporters. Those reports came from CARP members at 10 university campuses around the United States and included the purported political beliefs of Reagan's critics. One CARP report called a CISPES supporter "well-educated in Marxism" while other CARP reports attached "clippings culled from communist-inspired front groups."
The Globe reported that Frank Varelli, who worked for the FBI from 1981-84 coordinating the CISPES probe, said an FBI agent paid members of the Moon organization at Southern Methodist University while the Moon activists were raiding and disrupting CISPES rallies. "Every week, an agent I worked with used to go to SMU to pay the Moonies," Varelli said in an interview. Because of the CARP harassment, CISPES closed its SMU chapter.

Rev. Moon's Rising Political Influence
His empire is spending big money trying to win favor with conservatives.
On New Year's Day, 1987, South Korean mystic Sun Myung Moon, who considers himself to be the son of God, told his Unification church followers that he wanted to expand the church's political influence in the United States. His aim, Moon said, was "the natural subjugation of the American government and population."
The church and its businesses have spent as much as $300 million buying political clout. Through its 100,000-circulation Washington Times, Insight, a weekly newsmagazine, and a host of organizations that it funds, the church has become a major player in conservative politics. The church, which insists it doctrine stems from Christianity, is now trying to gain a foothold in right wing Christian circles through a new organization, the American Freedom Coalition. Moon's chief lieutenant, South Korean former attaché Col. Bo Hi Pak, boasted last year to conservative activist David Finzer: "We are going to make it so that no one can run for office in the United States without our permission."
Moon's bid for political power is disquieting because the church's theology runs counter to American democratic tradition. Moon claims that on Easter, 1936, when he was 16, Jesus appeared to him and told him that he had been chosen by God to complete the mission that Jesus had been unable to finish because of the Crucifixion. This mission, spelled out in his lectures in the text of The Divine Principle, consist in creating an "automatic theocracy to rule the world." Moon says, "Separation between religion and politics is what Satan likes most." But former Unification official Michael Warder says, "Within the Moon movement, there is no foundation for the ideas of freedom, the rule of law and the dignity of the individual as they are understood in the West."

The church's first and most expensive foray into the political arena was the Washington Times. The newspaper has lost more than $200 million since it was founded in 1982, but it has given the church needed prestige in Seoul and become a well read publication beyond its target audience of Washington conservatives. Claims by Washington Times editors that the paper is politically independent of the church were shattered in 1984 when James Whalen, its first editor and publisher, quit in protest of church attempts to assume direct control. Then in April, 1987, Editorial Page Editor William Cheshire and four colleges resigned over church interference with the newspaper's editorials. The Washington Times latest editor, Arnaud de Borchgrave, claims that the newspaper "has nothing to do with the church." But the paper and its sister publication, Insight, remain owned by News World Communications, whose president is Pak. While separate from the church's local ministry, it is an integral part of Moon's overall empire.

These organizations try to connect the church with the names of influential conservatives, who, according to former church official Warder, "provide legitimacy to Moon and his movement." In 1984 Joseph Churba, who had served for a year in the Reagan administration's Arm's Control and Disarmament Agency, was looking for someone to fund his Center for International Security. Through CAUSA, Pak agreed to aid a new organization, The International Security Council, with Churba as its president. The ISC's purpose, Churba stated, would be to counter Soviet attempts at "global hegemony."
Churba has recruited other Reagan officials, including former ACDA Director Eugene Rastow and former deputy U.N. Ambassador Charles Lichenstein. Lichenstein who is also a Heritage Foundation senior fellow, is chairman if ISC's International Advisory Council. The gnomelike Churba extols the "selfless commitment" of Rev. Moon to the project. He believes that the church has gotten a "raw deal" from the media because of "leftist Communist disinformation about its objectives and long term goals." But while the ISC states its link to CAUSA in its organizational brochure, it does not do so in its journal, Global Affairs, in the position papers it sends out to the press, or in the full page ads it has run opposing U.S.-Soviet arms-control agreements.
More tolerance. Through this method of recruiting, the church has established a network of affiliated organizations and connections in almost every conservative organization in Washington, including the Heritage Foundation, the largest of the conservative think tanks and an important source of government personnel during the Reagan administration. Although Heritage officials deny it, the foundation has dramatically changed its policy toward the Unification Church. In the early 80's the foundation, wary of the church's aims, prohibited staff or fellows from being associated with Unification Church organizations or taking money from the church or church-financed institutions.
As the Washington Times has become the voice of capital conservatives, the Heritage Foundation has become far more tolerant of church ties. The foundation accepts the participation of Lichenstein and other senior fellows in church-funded enterprises and allows its staff members to go to church conferences.
The Unification Church's newfound influence has occasioned intense debate among conservatives. One group of worried young conservatives meets regularly in private to compare notes about the problem. But little of the debate has surfaced in public forums. "Most people are afraid to address the issue because they don't want to publicize the extent of the church's involvement," says Amy Moritz of the Conservative National Center for Public Policy Research.
Because almost all conservative organizations in Washington have some ties to the church, conservatives also fear repercussions if they expose the church's role. That happened when one organization, the Capital Research Center, published a newsletter last November warning of the church's attempt to create a "centralized world theocracy." One of its board members, who was also on the board of the International Security Council, resigned in protest, and conservatives charging that the paper was creating discord on the right, besieged the center with angry calls. "We got a very, very strong reaction -- almost as if we were the enemy -- because we raised the issue," says CRC Chairman Willa Johnson, a former president of the Heritage Foundation.

As staff director of the House Subcommittee on International Relations, Robert Boettcher was in on the Korean scandal from the beginning. It was the investigations done by his staff that lead directly to the breaking of the scandal. His work put him in liaison with top officials in the CIA and in the Department of Justice as well as with Special Counsel Lean Jaworski and the staff and principals of the Ethics Committee investigation. Fluent in two far eastern languages and with an M.S. in international relations from Georgetown University, Mr. Boettcher served five years as a Foreign Service Officer with a specialty in Far Eastern affairs before joining Congressman Donald Fraser's staff in 1971. (that sound like someone who would jump off a building? If Boettcher were alive today, he would be the voice of this story. IMO.)
There is a Moonie explanation for everything.
Lying. One of the central tenets of the faith is the doctrine of Heavenly Deception. Good must deceive evil. The non-Moon world is evil. It must be lied to so it can help Moon take over. Then it can become good under Moon's control. In the Bible, Jacob lied to Isaac. God rewarded Jacob by making him the father of the nation of Israel. Closer to home, you lie to your children about Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, don't you?

The non-Moon world, being of Satan, lives under the laws of Cain. Constantly, they get in Moon's way. One law however is very useful. It makes it possible to try to get around all the others. The First Amendment to the constitution guarantees freedom of religion. As long as Moon says everything the cult does is religious, he can claim the protection of the First Amendment.
The advantages of using the first Amendment were seen early. Before Moon moved to the United States in 1971, he and his small band of followers realized the operation would have the most flexibility if it was called a church. Businesses, political activities, and tax exempt status could be protected. Moon was dubbed "Reverend" in 1969. In 1970 the name "United Family" was changed to "Unification Church." Organization and goals stayed the same. Only the name was changed, for its "effect on the institutions of society." A cult publication explained, "The name implies respectability and stability."
Since Moon's invasion of America began, he has marched steadily behind the First Amendment shield. Calling himself "Reverend" and his operation a church early enough, Moon put the burden of proof on the non-Moon world. His beliefs are fully protected by the First Amendment. He insists his actions are, too. His beliefs cover everything. No matter what the cult does, therefore, it is claimed to be an exercise of religious belief.
In the non-Moon world, Fraser conducts an investigation. He wants to find out if the Moon organization's political and business activities are part of the Korean influence campaign. At first, he has only allegations that the Moonies acted as unregistered agents of a foreign intelligence service, the KCIA. The Moonies can believe in God as they choose, but they ought not violate the law in the process, he thinks. He is amazed at what he finds: evidence that the Moon organization has violated laws on banking, immigration, taxes, currency control, charity fraud, arms export control, and foreign agents registration.
To the moonies, everything Fraser did from start to finish violated their freedom of religion. Since they claim everything they do is religious, Fraser had no right to question what they do. The cult's published comment on the Fraser Report says it well: "Its objections to the activities of the followers of Rev. Moon are fundamentally objections to their religious beliefs."
Moon apparently thinks his "religious beliefs" are special license to break laws. The new Messiah is above the laws of Cain. Whatever contempt Moon has for the for the laws of the United States, he sees fit to hide behind the First Amendment to the Constitution. That raises questions for the non-Moon world about the meaning of freedom of religion:
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to violate the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which outlaws slavery?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to be paid secretly by the KCIA to carry out a plot to throw eggs at the Japanese ambassador and disrupt an official visit of the Prime Minister of Japan?
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to smuggle large amounts of money into the United States?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to try to take over an American bank in violation of banking laws by buying half the banks stock secretly with cult money?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to smuggle hundreds of aliens into this country under the guise of "students" or "religious trainees" so they could put them to work full time in his businesses?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to avoid taxes by transferring large amounts of money from one cult member to another, calling it a loan?
Did freedom of religion give Moon's minions, Bo Hi Pak, the right to collect $1 million from Americans under the guise of a "Children's Relief Fund," and then use 93 percent of the money to pay public relations men?
Did freedom of religion give Moon and his cult the right to negotiate, as an unregistered agent of the Korean government, for the manufacture and export of M-16 rifles?
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to infiltrate the offices of Senators and Congressmen with covert agents who report details of personal lives to the cult for its special card file?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to refuse to answer questions about these activities before a subcommittee of Congress?
The Fraser Report recommended a federal task force to investigate the Moon organization for lawbreaking. Evidence of systematic violation of laws appears in the report. But a subcommittee of Congress is neither a law enforcement agency nor a court. It can only investigate and legislate. The Fraser Subcommittee did not recommend making any new laws to deal with the Moonies in the areas investigated. It found evidence that the Moon organizations had violated existing laws. What the subcommittee called for was for law enforcement and regulatory agencies to do their jobs, specifically the Department of Justice (including the FBI, the Antitrust Division, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service), the Treasury Department, the Security and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Internal Revenue Service.
Past attempts at investigating Moon activities by each of those agencies alone had been piecemeal, inconclusive, and without the benefit of pooled information. That worked to Moon's advantage every time. It is one of the pitfalls of the Washington bureaucracy. That was why the Fraser Subcommittee recommended a coordinated effort by an interagency task force.
After the Fraser Report and the Guyana tragedy, there was still no indication that any such investigation would begin.
The American system is ill-equipped to deal with Moon. He knows this and benefits from it. He can break some laws and use others for protection. By perverting freedom of religion, he can keep thousands in brainwashed captivity while he intimidates and manipulates the non-moon world. He hurls lawsuits at those who offend him, whether parents of cult members or The New York Times. He has Nobel laureates feeding his ego and prestige by attending his conferences. He has high-principled civil libertarians and churchmen rallying to his defense.
Moon also has held the Department of Justice cautiously at bay for years. In 1976, Undersecretary of State Habib had asked for an investigation of the Moonies under the Foreign Agents Registrations Act. Justice refused to even look, because the Moonies called themselves a church.
It was still hands off in 1977. On July 29, Assistant Attorney General Civiletti, in a letter to a Congressman, wrote, "It has been our experience that members of these religious sects are apparently competent, consenting adults." He decided to do nothing because to take brainwashing seriously "would seem to require finding that the members' religious beliefs were false." The United States government believed brainwashing was real enough in the Korean War. Apparently that was different because Communists were doing it to American soldiers. When Moon does it the name of God he gets away with it.
Attorney General Griffin Bell added confusion to his departments caution. After the deaths in Guyana, he said, "I don't know what a cult is. I'm a Baptist. Maybe that makes me a member of a cult." Two months later, on February 2, 1979, he said he believed Patty Hearst had been brainwashed.
An open society must let totalitarians have their say. If the Nazis are allowed to march down the street, and the Communists can publish their Daily World, then Moon has the right to tell people God wants him to take over the world. Likewise, others are entitled to criticize what he says. Not so, says Moon.
Hundreds from his cult were shipped to Washington to protest Senator Dole's information meeting on the cult phenomenon. Outside the Senate Office Building, they waved signs proclaiming "Senator Dole, this is a witch hunt." Inside, Neil Salonen took the stand and told Senators and Congressman what the Moonies thought about the meeting.
"This very proceeding itself violates the spirit of the First Amendment and violates the rights of believers which the First Amendment was designed to protect. It will have a chilling effect on the free exercise of those beliefs."
George Swope, a Baptist minister, gave a different view of congressional inquiry into church activities:
"Members of the congress I tell you frankly, if you receive hundreds of accusing letters from parents of young adults who have joined the Baptist denomination, and if you receive hundreds of statements from young adults who have left the Baptists alleging mind control, the potential for suicide and murder, illegal immigration and financial practices, and other destructive physical and psychological activities, I feel it would be your duty to establish a task force to investigate those allegations against my own denomination."

One major part of the Moon story has not been presented as of yet. When Moon first stepped out on the stage here, families all over America awoke to the nightmare of having lost a child to his group, many call a cult. The Moon organization used what former members call "mind control techniques" to manipulate and deceive potential recruits. With lying and deceit at its core the moonies disrupted families all over the country. It is my understanding that the moonies claim they quit lying in the 70's. This is not true. Among other examples of this was the 1993 Today Show's "Catherine's Story" which documented the lies and deception used to manipulate Catherine well into the 90's. Someone would have to be poorly informed or hugely naive to believe anything which comes from the Moon organization. They have proved their propensity to deceive over and over as the experiences detailed below will attest.

Timehost: Could you state what the core beliefs of the Unification Church are -- so that we're all clear? How are they different from mainstream Christianity?
Nansook Hong: Well, Rev. Moon claims to be the Messiah. He claims that Jesus came to him when he was 16. And he says that Jesus says that he failed since he didn't establish the ideal family. So Jesus had the spiritual foundation. Because he was crucified, he asked Rev. Moon to fulfill the Mission that Jesus failed. And Reverend Moon accepted. I think that's the primary difference. Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah. While Moonies believe that Rev. Moon is the Second Coming.
He and his wife are called the True Parents. Rev. Moon is the True Father. His wife is the True Mother. And they are meant to be the perfect family. And they are the ones who are going to teach us true family values and establish the Kingdom of Heaven. Rev. Moon has been proclaiming that he has established his ideal family, and fulfilled his mission, and when I pinpointed that his family is just as dysfunctional as any other family -- or more than most -- then I think his theology falls apart.

Nansook Hong: I think first of all, there are other organizations that have minority status, and they think that if one organization is persecuted, they could be next. And Moon spends a lot of money promoting himself. He has lots of organizations that he's founded, but those organizations don't go out and tell people they're started by Moon. So there are science conferences, and journalists' conferences that hide what they are about. But it's basically about turning everybody into Moonies.
Timehost: The Washington Times is one organization run by Moon, can you cite the names of any others?
Nansook Hong: The University of Bridgeport, Atlantic Video, the Manhattan Center Studio. Timeguest: There are newspapers all over, in Korea. Timeguest: Silhwha, a pharmeceutical company.
Timehost: You single out former Pres. George Bush and his wife for criticism in being willing to appear at Moon-sponsored functions, knowing full well where the money is coming from... why do you think they do it, and do you know if they've read your book?
Nansook Hong: I don't know whether they read the book. Why do I think they do it? I don't know. I read that Bush said that as long as Moon promotes family values, Bush will promote him. Timeguest: But Moon uses idealism to get to people -- and he doesn't practice what he preaches. Moon uses -- and pays -- lots of famous people -- Bush is one example. Jack Kemp and Barbara Walters are others. He does it to gain credibility. And I think that Bush has been helping Moon to achieve his goal.

Allan Tate Wood
Wood was higher up in the Moon group before they were even called Moonies. He was invited by the Nixon administration 'to come inside' and work out of the White House when he was running a Moon front group which supported the Viet Nam War. The training program at Belvedere was aimed at breaking down the individual's identity by subjecting him or her to an emotionally and physically exhausting schedule of repetitive lectures, exercise and door to door soliciting. Trainees were quartered in large rooms in army bunks with little or no privacy. Men were strongly advised to cut their hair short. Mustaches and beards were unthinkable. The entire scenario was an echo of Marine boot camp. The restructuring of the trainee's ego was based on Moon's theology that projects absolute faith in Moon as the essential building block of a "restored" personality.
It attacks the validity of the individual conscience. It explicitly denies the individual's capacity to make morally responsible existential decisions. Somewhere along the line in the theology, love of God is translated into blind obedience to Moon and his representatives in the hierarchical chain. One is finally left with submission to Moon as the only answer to fallen man's condition of moral paralysis.

The roommate remembered that the "new friends" were from a group, known by the acronym, CARP, standing for the innocuous title, Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles. After learning that CARP was "a front group" for the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church, Diglio and her husband, John's step-father, began a frantic search.
"I tried to call the church and they said they had no idea who he was."
The Diglios feared the worst, that John would be drawn into the controversial religious sect that has been accused by critics of "brainwashing" impressionable young people into becoming robotic followers of Moon as a new messiah. "When John did call," Debbie Diglio said, "I knew immediately that he was in trouble."
So began a four-year nightmare for Debbie Diglio. The "students" who surrounded him reinforced the messages from the speakers, while leaders of the group flattered Stacey and attended to his every need. "The seminar is completely rigged," Stacey told me. The other "students" turned out to be Unification Church members who Stacey later learned were "very well trained" in these recruitment methods.
"They gained my trust before I realized they were not worthy of it," Stacey complained. "They used the same tactics that the Chinese communists used. People don't recognize how dangerous it is because they're using mind-control techniques without prior consent. I didn't suspect that they had designs on me. ... It's like a Moonie factory. They sort of clone people there."
Stacey was not held at the Queens compound by force. Rather, he explained, the recruiters employed more subtle techniques of peer-group pressure and isolation. "When I was at that seven-day seminar, I had no idea my parents were trying to find me," he said. "For three months, I never left that property. ... I had five people patrolling me."

Once again, these are very sweeping generalities, and I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions. I do very clearly remember, however, the direction of the leaders, to look for what we called "prepared people" in our recruiting efforts, people with these qualities. The lone, young backpacker in the park didn't stand a chance! We'd practically fight over them! And if this person seemed friendly, open and divulged that he or she was concerned about the world and thinking about what they were going to do with their life, (and happened to have the weekend open), we'd be in witnessing heaven! We'd have them chalked up as spiritual children before they even made it to the center. Of course, we would do the indemnity prayer conditions anyway, just to make sure.

What few people know or take serious is that he and his wife claim to be the "True Parents of mankind," the "Return of Christ," that his goal is to take over the world, that living as a core member of his Unification Church is a type of modern day slavery, and that families whose loved ones have joined the church live in agony and terror, because they are hardly ever allowed to see their loved ones and because they are often threatened that all contact will be cut off if they speak negatively about the church!!!

Now, if you talk to UC members of course they'll tell you a totally different story. And they may have had a different experience - but the fact is that in the organization, people are manipulated and exploited. I myself was made to work for free for 6 1/2 years - without health insurance or any benefits. If you work for the Manhattan center you may get paid at first but they'll try to make a full time member out of you ...who either doesn't get paid ("voluntary work" for the Messiah) or who returns virtually all of his earnings to the church to support "Father's" work in building the "Kingdom of Heaven." You also have to understand that yes, Moonies are VERY friendly and likeable. That's why they are so effective in recruiting people. But they are not really interested in you as an individual but only as a future member and manpower for "Father's work". They will support you ...and use you for their purposes. Of course you would be a great asset to them cause they could use your talent to represent themselves even more effectively PR wise.

Frankly, I can't keep up with them. His front group gathered 3 or so thousand in Israel in Dec. 2003,(Moon will tell you 20,000 but he is a liar) for what John Goernfeld ( http://www.gorenfeld.net ) described as, one of Moon's "famous 'move beyond the three great religions, and worship me instead!' road shows for peace."
One article, mentioned a group protesting his gathering, saying he was no friend of the Jews. They can say that again. One former member on a Moon forum, characterized it this way, "Moon believes Hitler was doing God's will when he killed the Jews because they killed Jesus."
Moon isn't anyone's friend but his own, IMHO.

Moon believes that all of the world religions have served one purpose: to prepare for God to send the sinless man to set up the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Jesus was sinless, Moon teaches, but Jesus was never able to fulfill his mission to marry and have sinless children. The Jewish people were God's chosen people, but they failed to follow Jesus, and due to people's faithlessness and sin, Jesus had to go to the cross in order to save people spiritually. Moon teaches that Jesus resurrected spiritually, not physically and that Jesus couldn't go to Heaven, until Moon married him to a Korean woman and they raised spiritual children together.
Moon teaches that you can only enter Heaven as a heterosexual couple. In Moon's world, there will be no rights for gays. Likewise, Moon taught that all children and all marriages besides those sanctioned by the Unification Church is evil. From his point of view aborting a sinful child (not a product of one of his arranged marriages) was not a sin, it was a good thing since there would be one less person to "restore". Since Moon teaches that the child is deemed spiritually alive when it takes its first breath, it sets him ideologically 180 degrees apart from the religious conservatives who oppose abortion.
Moon teaches the doctrine of indemnity. It is the belief that only by working and providing good spiritual conditions that past sins can be erased. Moon made this reference to the Holocaust in 1974.
"By killing one man, Jesus, the Jewish people had to suffer for 2000 years. Countless numbers of people have been slaughtered. During the Second World War, 6 million people were slaughtered to cleanse all the sins of the Jewish people from the time of Jesus." (MASTER SPEAKS 2/14/74)
A prominent rabbi wrote an analysis paper of the Divine Principle in the late 1970's for The American Jewish Committee and found dozens of anti-Semitic references throughout the book. As I said before, in the world that Moon wants to rule, there will not be room for any other religion beside Unificationism.

JERUSALEM, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Leaders of Judaism, Islam and Christianity will have to think beyond the capacity of their own religions if they ever hope to see an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East, say an interfaith group meeting in Jerusalem Friday.
"Religion is God's way of guiding us to recover or restore that original ideal of true love and joy," said Chung Hwan Kwak, president of the Interreligious and International Peace Council, where delegates from 36 countries, including two former heads of state met.

Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders gave gifts of a crown, Menorah, and robes to central figures of the faiths at an outdoor peace rally in Jerusalem that topped a month of community service activities in Israel and the Palestinian territories throughout December.
"The best of what God gave you, you want to give to the other," Sudanese Muslim Taj Hamad told 8,000 people at the afternoon event in Jerusalem's Independence Park on December 22.
A gesture of reconciliation between the three Abrahamic faiths, organizers said the moment was an essential catalyst for peace in the Middle East.
"Without peace between spiritual leaders and religious leaders, peace won't exist," Shuki Ben-Ami, a rally organizer and Israeli-Jew, told a press conference earlier.

Hundreds of people were bussed to the rally from around Israel to join some 3,000 others who flew in from abroad.
The day began with a peace walk through Jerusalem's Old City, led by political, academic, media, and religious leaders taking part in a conference at the Sheraton Plaza Hotel to discuss solutions to the root causes of conflict.
Israeli security forces appeared relaxed as several thousand people snaked through the narrow, twisting streets of the Christian and Jewish Quarters of East Jerusalem, to the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock shrine atop the Temple Mount.

Rev. Moon shines over capital

Jerusalem's Sacher Park was a sea of people in yellow vests printed with the slogan "A Peace UN for our Global Family" on Monday afternoon. An estimated 3,000 Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Druse clergy, political leaders and concerned citizens from 17 countries, gathered for a "Heart to Heart Rally for Peace," sponsored by the Interreligious and International Peace Council (IIPC), an affiliate of Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Church of Unification.
Among those who gathered in front of the main stage, where local entertainers and speakers welcomed participants to Israel, were Mayor Yona Yahav of Haifa, the so-called "City of Tolerance," former Indonesian president Imam Abdurrahman Wahid and the current chairman of the Islamic Center of Orange County, California, US Rep. Danny Davis and Utah Senator Howard Stephenson, Archbishop George Augustus Stallings, founding Seychelles president Sir James Mancham, and Hamilton Green, former president of Guyana.
While rally chairman Dr. Chang Shik Yang invoked the authority of Rev. Moon and energized the crowd with promises of the establishment of the "Kingdom of Peace," members of the anti-missionary Lev L'achim organization protested outside the guarded gates that enclosed the event.
"Publicly, they are all about peace, peace, peace," said one activist who preferred to remain anonymous. "But they don't tell people here that Rev. Moon's church is against the Jews."
But, according to organizer Chang, who said the event was being broadcast to about 12 million people around the world through the Internet, this is not the case. "The age of conversion is over," he said. "We have respect for each of the various faiths. Rev. Moon is working beyond all denominations for world peace.
"We must come together as one and that can only happen through true love," he continued. "True love means giving and forgetting that you gave. It means loving not only the people who are close to us, but even our enemies. If we cannot forgive, if we cannot love, we can never unite. Wherever we go, whatever we do, the message is the same: We must tear down the walls that separate us, stop the bloody violence, and put away our fears and prejudices that block the way of peace."
For Fred Jones, a Christian participant and self-described "ambassador for peace" from Dallas, Texas, it is the unifying aspect of Moon's philosophy that is appealing.
"We all believe in cultural appreciation. We are all faith-based organizations that believe in God, and this is our common ground. The differences between us are minimal, compared to what we have in common.
"The Palestinians are having a really hard time. What else do they have left to do, but fight?" continued Jones. "Then, on the Israeli side, they have been fighting somebody or someone for centuries, so I can understand why they feel like somebody is always on them. Hopefully, our presence here can make some little difference."
Local Jews and Arabs in attendance were not nearly as hopeful. "I don't think these big demonstrations really accomplish anything," said Steven Cohen, a 28-year-old Jew from Tel Aviv who happened to be visiting Jerusalem at the time of the rally.
"I don't think this event will have an impact on the peace process between the Jews and the Palestinians," agreed Amani Muhammad, a Christian Arab schoolteacher from a small village in the Galilee. "There won't be peace until Jerusalem is divided."

JERUSALEM - Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid condemned Palestinian suicide bombings Sunday at an interfaith gathering in Jerusalem designed to push the people of the region toward peace.
Wahid joined Native Americans, Israeli lawmakers, imams, American Baptists and former world leaders Sunday to kick off a peace mission to the Holy Land of about 3,000 members of a U.S.-based peace group sponsored by the founder of the Unification Church.
Started in 1999 by Korean-American evangelist Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace has founded chapters in 154 countries, encouraging peace recognizing the common points shared by religions.
About 30 members of the IIFWP opened a news conference with a peace song to the tune of a popular Israeli melody. The group - many from the American Clergy Leadership Conference - swayed and clapped in a scene reminiscent of a religious revival.
Participants called for an end to three years of violence that has taken the lives of more than 2,500 people on the Palestinian side - most in Israeli military operations - and nearly 900 on the Israeli side - half in Palestinian suicide bomb attacks.
Wahid, a member of the federation's advisory board and an imam himself, said Palestinians who have committed suicide bombings in the name of Islam during more than three years of fighting with Israel have misinterpreted the religion.
"All my life I have called on Muslims to ... be on good terms with others," said Wahid who ruled the most populous Muslim country for a year and a half, until July 2001. "It's natural for us to condemn terrorism and ... suicide bombings." Wahid, a moderate, is a longtime supporter of peace with Israel.
Indonesia has been hard hit by extremist Islamic attackers. On October 12, 2002, bombers blew up a night club on the island of Bali, killing 202 people. On August 5, an Islamic suicide bomber killed 11 bystanders at a hotel in Jakarta.
The federation did not present any Mideast peace proposals or religious statements but said members had met with several Palestinian clerics and Israeli rabbis who agreed with their cause, including Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar. They want to infuse current political efforts with a peaceful spirit, they said.
Most of the group at the news conference Sunday was American, including state legislators from Maine, New Hampshire, Arizona and Georgia. Organizers said they expect at least 3,000 members of the IIFWP, most of them Americans, to take part in a peace march at holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City on Monday.
"I'm here to tell people that there are people from all over the world who are pulling for them, praying for them," said Lois Snowe-Mello, a Republican state representative from Maine.
Members visited sites of suicide bombings in Israel and met with children in Gaza as part of the four-day symposium of the IIFWP.
Native American Chief Gayokla-Nichi Ayala of the Californian Kahwega tribe called on human beings to learn from the "crawlers and creepers who taught us songs of unity and healing ... never songs of destruction and killing each other." He was dressed in traditional leather clothing and twirled two large feathers in his hand as he spoke.

He told the gathering of international Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders on Sunday (21/12/03) that Palestinians who carry out suicide attacks in the name of Islam have misinterpreted the Koran.
"All my life I have called on Muslims to... be on good terms with others… It's natural for us to condemn terrorism and... suicide bombings," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
Wahid, who ruled Indonesia from October 1999 to July 2001, is a moderate Muslim leader and a longtime supporter of peace initiatives between Israel and Palestine.
The two-day conference of international political and religious leaders was sponsored by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP).
Founded in 1999 by Korean-American evangelist Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the IIFWP has chapters in 154 countries, encouraging world peace by recognizing the similar values shared by religions.
Moon is the leader of the Unification Church, followers of which are often widely referred to as "Moonies".
Wahid, who arrived in Israel on Friday, is a member of IIFWP's advisory board. He is also a member of Israel's Shimon Peres Foundation and the former head of Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization.
He has long called for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Indonesia, which is home to the world’s largest Muslim population and a staunch supporter of Palestinian statehood.
Wahid’s efforts to promote formal bilateral ties often earned him harsh criticism from right-wing Muslims at home, but he remains adamant that greater understanding through dialog and diplomatic relations is needed to overcome animosity and violence.
In response to those who criticize his stance on Israel, Wahid acknowledges the Koran states a good Muslim is the enemy of infidels, but he argues that Christians and Jews are not infidels because they believe in God.
Despite the absence of official diplomatic links, Israel has long maintained covert ties with Indonesia. According to some reports, Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, under the cover of a business office, has been present in Jakarta for years.
Reports say Indonesian officers have been trained in Israel in anti-terrorist methods, and intelligence agencies of both countries have been exchanging information since the late 1960s.
Former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky has said the Israeli agency is very well entrenched in Indonesia, with the knowledge and permission of the Indonesian government.
Some reports imply that Israel in the late 1980s sold 28 US-made Skyhawk fighter aircraft to Indonesia.
Anti-corruption activist George Aditjondro has written about the Suharto regime's purchase of Israeli Uzi guns and other weapons through Mossad-linked arms trader Shaul Eisenberg.
Following the signing of a peace agreement between Israel and Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization in September 1993, then Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin visited Jakarta in October 1993 as the guest of then president Suharto.
That was the last time an Israeli head of state has visited Indonesia, but informal trade continues between the two nations.
Due to trade barriers, direct bilateral trade between Indonesian and Israel stands at only about $20 million annually.
Israel is reportedly interested in buying palm oil, coffee, plywood and furniture; while Indonesia is interested in Israel’s telecommunications equipment and other high-tech products.

Former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid is to join an array of international political and religious figures in Jerusalem next week for an interfaith peace conference.
Wahid and another 3,000 delegates from around the world will attend the two-day conference, which starts with an opening banquet at the Sheraton Plaza hotel in the holy city Friday night.
Following the conference, the delegates will join hundreds of Israelis to march for peace through Jerusalem's Old City on Monday, after which there will be peace rally at Independence Park.
The interfaith conference is sponsored by the Interreligious and International Peace Council -- a body set up by Reverend Doctor Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church, more commonly known as the "Moonies".
Wahid, who held office between 1999-2001, was due to arrive in Israel on Friday, the conference organisers told AFP.
The former Indonesian leader, who belongs to Israel's Shimon Peres Foundation, is also the former head of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia's biggest moderate Islamic group which counts more than 40 million members.
Wahid has been criticized for advocating trade and diplomatic ties with Israel.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim majority state, is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

They must be jealous of all the publicity that Yossi Beilin, Abed Rabbo, Sari Nusseibeh and Ami Ayalon have been getting with their various Middle East plans over the past few weeks. The Moonies have suddenly sprung onto the "peace" scene with a series of rallies and activity in Israel. (Are the Moonies still conducting those mass weddings somewhere in the world??)
After papering the city with flyers in Hebrew and Arabic announcing the Heart to Heart Peace Rally under the auspices of the innocuous -sounding "Inter-religious & International Federation for World Peace," the group was outed by a Jerusalem Post article revealing Rev. Sun Myung Moon as the real sponsor.
Three thousand Moon adherents (they evidently resent being called Moonies...) arrived in Israel from 70 countries to sit in the cold in Independence Park to listen to a two hour program of speeches full of platitudes, interspersed with musical selections from a Sufi Chant Ensemble, the Black Hebrew Choir of Dimona and the Gaya Band.

Organizers had hoped that 30,000 people would show up to join them, and they did their best by organizing dozens of buses full of Arabs from Nazareth and other places in the Galilee - but still, there were no more than 5-6,000 people there. The predominantly Arab crowd was dotted with a few Jewish peace activist types, but the majority of those cheering each mention of Rev. Moon were his faithful adherents all dressed in identical colored caps and vests, who had each contributed $500 of their own money to pay for the event. At least that's what spokesperson Susan Fefferman of Maryland told me in answer to a question about the budget for the event.
Fefferman claims that there are 10 Israeli activists for Moon who were ready to help carry out Moon's decision to take an active role in the Middle East, with another 80-100 here "who help out in some way." Plans call for further rallies in January and February. Leaders of the Moonie group met with Yasser Arafat in Ramallah last week, and received a gift from Yasser for Moon, she told me.

Recently, the right has been in a tizzy over George Soros's open - up front - donations to liberal causes. Well, although I find it distasteful mentioning Mr. Soros in the same breath as Moon, the comparison is NOT close, but maybe this can show the conservatives what hypocrites they are. Moon has been funding and guiding the right for a couple decades, but have you ever heard O'reilly say anything about this? When are conservatives going to go on FOX and bow down and pay homage to their 'savior' Moon?

His empire is spending big money trying to win favor with conservatives.
More tolerance. Through this method of recruiting, the church has established a network of affiliated organizations and connections in almost every conservative organization in Washington, including the Heritage Foundation, the largest of the conservative think tanks and an important source of government personnel during the Reagan administration. Although Heritage officials deny it, the foundation has dramatically changed its policy toward the Unification Church. In the early 80's the foundation, wary of the church's aims, prohibited staff or fellows from being associated with Unification Church organizations or taking money from the church or church-financed institutions.
As the Washington Times has become the voice of capital conservatives, the Heritage Foundation has become far more tolerant of church ties. The foundation accepts the participation of Lichenstein and other senior fellows in church-funded enterprises and allows its staff members to go to church conferences.
The Unification Church's newfound influence has occasioned intense debate among conservatives. One group of worried young conservatives meets regularly in private to compare notes about the problem. But little of the debate has surfaced in public forums. "Most people are afraid to address the issue because they don't want to publicize the extent of the church's involvement," says Amy Moritz of the Conservative National Center for Public Policy Research.
Because almost all conservative organizations in Washington have some ties to the church, conservatives also fear repercussions if they expose the church's role. That happened when one organization, the Capital Research Center, published a newsletter last November warning of the church's attempt to create a "centralized world theocracy." One of its board members, who was also on the board of the International Security Council, resigned in protest, and conservatives charging that the paper was creating discord on the right, besieged the center with angry calls. "We got a very, very strong reaction -- almost as if we were the enemy -- because we raised the issue," says CRC Chairman Willa Johnson, a former president of the Heritage Foundation. In 1983, the GOP's moderate Ripon Society charged that the New Right had entered "an alliance of expediency" with Moon's church. Ripon's chairman, Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, released a study which alleged that the College Republican National Committee "solicited and received" money from Moon's Unification Church in 1981. The study also accused Reed Irvine's Accuracy in Media of benefitting from low-cost or volunteer workers supplied by Moon.
Leach said the Unification Church has "infiltrated the New Right and the party it (the New Right) wants to control, the Republican Party, and infiltrated the media as well." Leach's news conference was broken up when then-college GOP leader Grover Norquist accused Leach of lying. ....

The deal called for construction of a hotel complex in Pyongyang as well as a new Holy Land at the site of Moon's birth in North Korea, one document said. The DIA said the deal sprang from a face-to-face meeting between Moon and Kim Il Sung in North Korea from Nov. 30 to Dec. 8, 1991.
These talks took place secretly, without the knowledge of the South Korean government, the DIA wrote on Feb. 2, 1994. ÒIn the original deal with Kim (Il Sung), Moon paid several tens of million dollars as a down-payment into an overseas account, the DIA said in a cable dated Aug. 14, 1994.
The DIA said Moon's organization also delivered money to Kim Il Sung's son and successor, Kim Jong Il.
In 1993, the Unification Church sold a piece of property located in Pennsylvania, the DIA reported on Sept. 9, 1994. ÒThe profit on the sale, approximately $3 million was sent through a bank in China to the Hong Kong branch of the KS (South Korean) company Samsung Group. The money was later presented to Kim Jung Il (Kim Jong Il) as a birthday present.
After Kim Il Sung's death in 1994 and his succession by his son, Kim Jong Il, Moon dispatched his longtime aide, Bo Hi Pak, to ensure that the business deals were still on track with Kim Jong Il Òand his coterie, the DIA reported.

The Washington Times did not note that its founder - who continues to subsidize the newspaper with tens of millions of dollars a year - had defied a U.S. trade embargo aimed at containing the military ambitions of North Korea.
By supplying money at a time when North Korea was desperate for hard currency, Moon helped deliver the means for the communist state to advance exactly the strategic threat that MoonÕs newspaper now says will require billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to thwart.
That money bought Moon influence inside North Korea. It is less clear how much influence Moon and his associates will have inside a George W. Bush White House, given Moon's longstanding -- though little known -- support for the Bush family.

Pak cultivated the friendship of an airline pilot, Robert Roland, and his wife, but did not tell them of his association with Moon. Boettcher learned that when Roland asked about Pak's duties as assistant military attache, Pak said he "was responsible for liaison between South Koreans and American intelligence agencies, which often required his visiting the super-secret National Security Agency (NSA) located at Fort Meade, Maryland."

The group says the church has paid out about $150 million in settlements to avoid more lawsuits.

Some observers, however, see goals in the Moon Organization's activities which are clearly political, including those carried on by the Unification Church. Allen Tate Wood, testified that in his view the UC was not a church at all: "It is my contention that it is certainly not a church. Another ex-member said that her experience in the church led her to believe that Moon intended to make UC members into "a little political army."
The opinion rendered by the New York Tax Commission in denying tax-exemption for certain UC properties stated: "although the applicant association does in certain aspects bespeak of a religious association, it is in our opinion so threaded with political motives and activities that it requires us to deny its application." It is also interesting to note that Moon himself saw danger in linking politics to his spiritual movement. In relation to the anti-Communist ideology, Moon said:
"One thing that makes it difficult for us to advance full-stream. (sic) is that we cannot quite proclaim our movement as a church on the foundation of the V.O.C. (Victory Over Communism) ideology * * * We must, at any cost, let the people know that Unified Thought, our philosophy, is based on our theological doctrine. Otherwise, we cannot connect the V.O.C. movement with our church movement."
In 1974, while preparing his followers for a demonstration at the U.N. against withdrawal of troops from South Korea Moon said:
"You must remember that you should not be saying anything in political terms. You must say, "We are not concerned about political things. We are not doing this for political reasons, but out of humanitarian motivation."

Craig, who was one of the first ministers in our region to take down the cross, about how spiritually he received many directions about how to perform the ceremony in his church. He was spiritually told to cover the cross with the Family Federation flag before he ever saw the video of Dr. Yang in Jerusalem. He also replaced an image of the flag over all the places where crosses were hung or present in his church. Bishop Craig also had a dream that a cross was struck down off the top of a church by lightning, before we told him about the cross on the chapel at Barrytown. He sincerely encouraged the other ministers to make every effort to go to Jerusalem, even if they borrow the money from the bank.
Next testimony was from Bishop Frank Kirkwood of the New Covenant Fellowship Ministries in Birmingham AL, who shared how his church congregation has tripled in size since taking down the cross on August 17th.

Dark Side of Rev. Moon: Hooking George Bush
Bush then held up the colorful new newspaper and complimented several articles, including one flattering piece about Barbara Bush. Bush's speech was so effusive that it surprised even Moon's followers.
"Once again, heaven turned a disappointment into a victory," the Unification News exulted. "Everyone was delighted to hear his compliments. We knew he would give an appropriate and 'nice' speech, but praise in Father's presence was more than we expected. ... It was vindication. We could just hear a sigh of relief from Heaven."
Bush's endorsement of The Washington Times' editorial independence also was not truthful. Almost since it opened in 1982, a string of senior editors and correspondents have resigned, citing the manipulation of the news by Moon and his subordinates. The first editor, James Whelan, resigned in 1984, confessing that he had "blood on his hands" for helping the church achieve greater legitimacy.

Perhaps even more remarkable, the Reagan administration showed greater respect for Moon's constitutional rights than those of some U.S. citizens. Starting in 1981, the FBI cooperated with one of Moon's front groups during a five-year nationwide investigation of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), a domestic organization critical of Reagan's policies in Central America, according to FBI documents cited by The Boston Globe. (April 20, 1988)
In 1981, the FBI began collecting reports from Moon's Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) which was spying on CISPES supporters. Those reports came from CARP members at 10 university campuses around the United States and included the purported political beliefs of Reagan's critics. One CARP report called a CISPES supporter "well-educated in Marxism" while other CARP reports attached "clippings culled from communist-inspired front groups."
The Globe reported that Frank Varelli, who worked for the FBI from 1981-84 coordinating the CISPES probe, said an FBI agent paid members of the Moon organization at Southern Methodist University while the Moon activists were raiding and disrupting CISPES rallies. "Every week, an agent I worked with used to go to SMU to pay the Moonies," Varelli said in an interview. Because of the CARP harassment, CISPES closed its SMU chapter.

According to later Bolivian government and newspaper reports, a Moon representative invested about $4 million in preparations for the coup. Bolivia's WACL representatives also played key roles, and CAUSA, one of Moon's anti-communist organizations, listed as members nearly all the leading Bolivian coup-makers.

His empire is spending big money trying to win favor with conservatives.
On New Year's Day, 1987, South Korean mystic Sun Myung Moon, who considers himself to be the son of God, told his Unification church followers that he wanted to expand the church's political influence in the United States. His aim, Moon said, was "the natural subjugation of the American government and population."
The church and its businesses have spent as much as $300 million buying political clout. Through its 100,000-circulation Washington Times, Insight, a weekly newsmagazine, and a host of organizations that it funds, the church has become a major player in conservative politics. The church, which insists it doctrine stems from Christianity, is now trying to gain a foothold in right wing Christian circles through a new organization, the American Freedom Coalition. Moon's chief lieutenant, South Korean former attaché Col. Bo Hi Pak, boasted last year to conservative activist David Finzer: "We are going to make it so that no one can run for office in the United States without our permission."
Moon's bid for political power is disquieting because the church's theology runs counter to American democratic tradition. Moon claims that on Easter, 1936, when he was 16, Jesus appeared to him and told him that he had been chosen by God to complete the mission that Jesus had been unable to finish because of the Crucifixion. This mission, spelled out in his lectures in the text of The Divine Principle, consist in creating an "automatic theocracy to rule the world." Moon says, "Separation between religion and politics is what Satan likes most." But former Unification official Michael Warder says, "Within the Moon movement, there is no foundation for the ideas of freedom, the rule of law and the dignity of the individual as they are understood in the West."

The church's first and most expensive foray into the political arena was the Washington Times. The newspaper has lost more than $200 million since it was founded in 1982, but it has given the church needed prestige in Seoul and become a well read publication beyond its target audience of Washington conservatives. Claims by Washington Times editors that the paper is politically independent of the church were shattered in 1984 when James Whalen, its first editor and publisher, quit in protest of church attempts to assume direct control. Then in April, 1987, Editorial Page Editor William Cheshire and four colleges resigned over church interference with the newspaper's editorials. The Washington Times latest editor, Arnaud de Borchgrave, claims that the newspaper "has nothing to do with the church." But the paper and its sister publication, Insight, remain owned by News World Communications, whose president is Pak. While separate from the church's local ministry, it is an integral part of Moon's overall empire.

These organizations try to connect the church with the names of influential conservatives, who, according to former church official Warder, "provide legitimacy to Moon and his movement." In 1984 Joseph Churba, who had served for a year in the Reagan administration's Arm's Control and Disarmament Agency, was looking for someone to fund his Center for International Security. Through CAUSA, Pak agreed to aid a new organization, The International Security Council, with Churba as its president. The ISC's purpose, Churba stated, would be to counter Soviet attempts at "global hegemony."
Churba has recruited other Reagan officials, including former ACDA Director Eugene Rastow and former deputy U.N. Ambassador Charles Lichenstein. Lichenstein who is also a Heritage Foundation senior fellow, is chairman if ISC's International Advisory Council. The gnomelike Churba extols the "selfless commitment" of Rev. Moon to the project. He believes that the church has gotten a "raw deal" from the media because of "leftist Communist disinformation about its objectives and long term goals." But while the ISC states its link to CAUSA in its organizational brochure, it does not do so in its journal, Global Affairs, in the position papers it sends out to the press, or in the full page ads it has run opposing U.S.-Soviet arms-control agreements.
More tolerance. Through this method of recruiting, the church has established a network of affiliated organizations and connections in almost every conservative organization in Washington, including the Heritage Foundation, the largest of the conservative think tanks and an important source of government personnel during the Reagan administration. Although Heritage officials deny it, the foundation has dramatically changed its policy toward the Unification Church. In the early 80's the foundation, wary of the church's aims, prohibited staff or fellows from being associated with Unification Church organizations or taking money from the church or church-financed institutions.
As the Washington Times has become the voice of capital conservatives, the Heritage Foundation has become far more tolerant of church ties. The foundation accepts the participation of Lichenstein and other senior fellows in church-funded enterprises and allows its staff members to go to church conferences.
The Unification Church's newfound influence has occasioned intense debate among conservatives. One group of worried young conservatives meets regularly in private to compare notes about the problem. But little of the debate has surfaced in public forums. "Most people are afraid to address the issue because they don't want to publicize the extent of the church's involvement," says Amy Moritz of the Conservative National Center for Public Policy Research.
Because almost all conservative organizations in Washington have some ties to the church, conservatives also fear repercussions if they expose the church's role. That happened when one organization, the Capital Research Center, published a newsletter last November warning of the church's attempt to create a "centralized world theocracy." One of its board members, who was also on the board of the International Security Council, resigned in protest, and conservatives charging that the paper was creating discord on the right, besieged the center with angry calls. "We got a very, very strong reaction -- almost as if we were the enemy -- because we raised the issue," says CRC Chairman Willa Johnson, a former president of the Heritage Foundation.

As staff director of the House Subcommittee on International Relations, Robert Boettcher was in on the Korean scandal from the beginning. It was the investigations done by his staff that lead directly to the breaking of the scandal. His work put him in liaison with top officials in the CIA and in the Department of Justice as well as with Special Counsel Lean Jaworski and the staff and principals of the Ethics Committee investigation. Fluent in two far eastern languages and with an M.S. in international relations from Georgetown University, Mr. Boettcher served five years as a Foreign Service Officer with a specialty in Far Eastern affairs before joining Congressman Donald Fraser's staff in 1971. (that sound like someone who would jump off a building? If Boettcher were alive today, he would be the voice of this story. IMO.)
There is a Moonie explanation for everything.
Lying. One of the central tenets of the faith is the doctrine of Heavenly Deception. Good must deceive evil. The non-Moon world is evil. It must be lied to so it can help Moon take over. Then it can become good under Moon's control. In the Bible, Jacob lied to Isaac. God rewarded Jacob by making him the father of the nation of Israel. Closer to home, you lie to your children about Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, don't you?

The non-Moon world, being of Satan, lives under the laws of Cain. Constantly, they get in Moon's way. One law however is very useful. It makes it possible to try to get around all the others. The First Amendment to the constitution guarantees freedom of religion. As long as Moon says everything the cult does is religious, he can claim the protection of the First Amendment.
The advantages of using the first Amendment were seen early. Before Moon moved to the United States in 1971, he and his small band of followers realized the operation would have the most flexibility if it was called a church. Businesses, political activities, and tax exempt status could be protected. Moon was dubbed "Reverend" in 1969. In 1970 the name "United Family" was changed to "Unification Church." Organization and goals stayed the same. Only the name was changed, for its "effect on the institutions of society." A cult publication explained, "The name implies respectability and stability."
Since Moon's invasion of America began, he has marched steadily behind the First Amendment shield. Calling himself "Reverend" and his operation a church early enough, Moon put the burden of proof on the non-Moon world. His beliefs are fully protected by the First Amendment. He insists his actions are, too. His beliefs cover everything. No matter what the cult does, therefore, it is claimed to be an exercise of religious belief.
In the non-Moon world, Fraser conducts an investigation. He wants to find out if the Moon organization's political and business activities are part of the Korean influence campaign. At first, he has only allegations that the Moonies acted as unregistered agents of a foreign intelligence service, the KCIA. The Moonies can believe in God as they choose, but they ought not violate the law in the process, he thinks. He is amazed at what he finds: evidence that the Moon organization has violated laws on banking, immigration, taxes, currency control, charity fraud, arms export control, and foreign agents registration.
To the moonies, everything Fraser did from start to finish violated their freedom of religion. Since they claim everything they do is religious, Fraser had no right to question what they do. The cult's published comment on the Fraser Report says it well: "Its objections to the activities of the followers of Rev. Moon are fundamentally objections to their religious beliefs."
Moon apparently thinks his "religious beliefs" are special license to break laws. The new Messiah is above the laws of Cain. Whatever contempt Moon has for the for the laws of the United States, he sees fit to hide behind the First Amendment to the Constitution. That raises questions for the non-Moon world about the meaning of freedom of religion:
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to violate the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which outlaws slavery?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to be paid secretly by the KCIA to carry out a plot to throw eggs at the Japanese ambassador and disrupt an official visit of the Prime Minister of Japan?
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to smuggle large amounts of money into the United States?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to try to take over an American bank in violation of banking laws by buying half the banks stock secretly with cult money?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to smuggle hundreds of aliens into this country under the guise of "students" or "religious trainees" so they could put them to work full time in his businesses?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to avoid taxes by transferring large amounts of money from one cult member to another, calling it a loan?
Did freedom of religion give Moon's minions, Bo Hi Pak, the right to collect $1 million from Americans under the guise of a "Children's Relief Fund," and then use 93 percent of the money to pay public relations men?
Did freedom of religion give Moon and his cult the right to negotiate, as an unregistered agent of the Korean government, for the manufacture and export of M-16 rifles?
Does freedom of religion give Moon the right to infiltrate the offices of Senators and Congressmen with covert agents who report details of personal lives to the cult for its special card file?
Did freedom of religion give Moon the right to refuse to answer questions about these activities before a subcommittee of Congress?
The Fraser Report recommended a federal task force to investigate the Moon organization for lawbreaking. Evidence of systematic violation of laws appears in the report. But a subcommittee of Congress is neither a law enforcement agency nor a court. It can only investigate and legislate. The Fraser Subcommittee did not recommend making any new laws to deal with the Moonies in the areas investigated. It found evidence that the Moon organizations had violated existing laws. What the subcommittee called for was for law enforcement and regulatory agencies to do their jobs, specifically the Department of Justice (including the FBI, the Antitrust Division, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service), the Treasury Department, the Security and Exchange Commission, the Federal Reserve Board, and the Internal Revenue Service.
Past attempts at investigating Moon activities by each of those agencies alone had been piecemeal, inconclusive, and without the benefit of pooled information. That worked to Moon's advantage every time. It is one of the pitfalls of the Washington bureaucracy. That was why the Fraser Subcommittee recommended a coordinated effort by an interagency task force.
After the Fraser Report and the Guyana tragedy, there was still no indication that any such investigation would begin.
The American system is ill-equipped to deal with Moon. He knows this and benefits from it. He can break some laws and use others for protection. By perverting freedom of religion, he can keep thousands in brainwashed captivity while he intimidates and manipulates the non-moon world. He hurls lawsuits at those who offend him, whether parents of cult members or The New York Times. He has Nobel laureates feeding his ego and prestige by attending his conferences. He has high-principled civil libertarians and churchmen rallying to his defense.
Moon also has held the Department of Justice cautiously at bay for years. In 1976, Undersecretary of State Habib had asked for an investigation of the Moonies under the Foreign Agents Registrations Act. Justice refused to even look, because the Moonies called themselves a church.
It was still hands off in 1977. On July 29, Assistant Attorney General Civiletti, in a letter to a Congressman, wrote, "It has been our experience that members of these religious sects are apparently competent, consenting adults." He decided to do nothing because to take brainwashing seriously "would seem to require finding that the members' religious beliefs were false." The United States government believed brainwashing was real enough in the Korean War. Apparently that was different because Communists were doing it to American soldiers. When Moon does it the name of God he gets away with it.
Attorney General Griffin Bell added confusion to his departments caution. After the deaths in Guyana, he said, "I don't know what a cult is. I'm a Baptist. Maybe that makes me a member of a cult." Two months later, on February 2, 1979, he said he believed Patty Hearst had been brainwashed.
An open society must let totalitarians have their say. If the Nazis are allowed to march down the street, and the Communists can publish their Daily World, then Moon has the right to tell people God wants him to take over the world. Likewise, others are entitled to criticize what he says. Not so, says Moon.
Hundreds from his cult were shipped to Washington to protest Senator Dole's information meeting on the cult phenomenon. Outside the Senate Office Building, they waved signs proclaiming "Senator Dole, this is a witch hunt." Inside, Neil Salonen took the stand and told Senators and Congressman what the Moonies thought about the meeting.
"This very proceeding itself violates the spirit of the First Amendment and violates the rights of believers which the First Amendment was designed to protect. It will have a chilling effect on the free exercise of those beliefs."
George Swope, a Baptist minister, gave a different view of congressional inquiry into church activities:
"Members of the congress I tell you frankly, if you receive hundreds of accusing letters from parents of young adults who have joined the Baptist denomination, and if you receive hundreds of statements from young adults who have left the Baptists alleging mind control, the potential for suicide and murder, illegal immigration and financial practices, and other destructive physical and psychological activities, I feel it would be your duty to establish a task force to investigate those allegations against my own denomination."

One major part of the Moon story has not been presented as of yet. When Moon first stepped out on the stage here, families all over America awoke to the nightmare of having lost a child to his group, many call a cult. The Moon organization used what former members call "mind control techniques" to manipulate and deceive potential recruits. With lying and deceit at its core the moonies disrupted families all over the country. It is my understanding that the moonies claim they quit lying in the 70's. This is not true. Among other examples of this was the 1993 Today Show's "Catherine's Story" which documented the lies and deception used to manipulate Catherine well into the 90's. Someone would have to be poorly informed or hugely naive to believe anything which comes from the Moon organization. They have proved their propensity to deceive over and over as the experiences detailed below will attest.

Timehost: Could you state what the core beliefs of the Unification Church are -- so that we're all clear? How are they different from mainstream Christianity?
Nansook Hong: Well, Rev. Moon claims to be the Messiah. He claims that Jesus came to him when he was 16. And he says that Jesus says that he failed since he didn't establish the ideal family. So Jesus had the spiritual foundation. Because he was crucified, he asked Rev. Moon to fulfill the Mission that Jesus failed. And Reverend Moon accepted. I think that's the primary difference. Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah. While Moonies believe that Rev. Moon is the Second Coming.
He and his wife are called the True Parents. Rev. Moon is the True Father. His wife is the True Mother. And they are meant to be the perfect family. And they are the ones who are going to teach us true family values and establish the Kingdom of Heaven. Rev. Moon has been proclaiming that he has established his ideal family, and fulfilled his mission, and when I pinpointed that his family is just as dysfunctional as any other family -- or more than most -- then I think his theology falls apart.

Nansook Hong: I think first of all, there are other organizations that have minority status, and they think that if one organization is persecuted, they could be next. And Moon spends a lot of money promoting himself. He has lots of organizations that he's founded, but those organizations don't go out and tell people they're started by Moon. So there are science conferences, and journalists' conferences that hide what they are about. But it's basically about turning everybody into Moonies.
Timehost: The Washington Times is one organization run by Moon, can you cite the names of any others?
Nansook Hong: The University of Bridgeport, Atlantic Video, the Manhattan Center Studio. Timeguest: There are newspapers all over, in Korea. Timeguest: Silhwha, a pharmeceutical company.
Timehost: You single out former Pres. George Bush and his wife for criticism in being willing to appear at Moon-sponsored functions, knowing full well where the money is coming from... why do you think they do it, and do you know if they've read your book?
Nansook Hong: I don't know whether they read the book. Why do I think they do it? I don't know. I read that Bush said that as long as Moon promotes family values, Bush will promote him. Timeguest: But Moon uses idealism to get to people -- and he doesn't practice what he preaches. Moon uses -- and pays -- lots of famous people -- Bush is one example. Jack Kemp and Barbara Walters are others. He does it to gain credibility. And I think that Bush has been helping Moon to achieve his goal.
(note: it is my understanding when Barbara Walters lent her name to Moon, she was unaware of the groups ties to him and said she would never do it again.)

Allan Tate Wood
Wood was higher up in the Moon group before they were even called Moonies. The training program at Belvedere was aimed at breaking down the individual's identity by subjecting him or her to an emotionally and physically exhausting schedule of repetitive lectures, exercise and door to door soliciting. Trainees were quartered in large rooms in army bunks with little or no privacy. Men were strongly advised to cut their hair short. Mustaches and beards were unthinkable. The entire scenario was an echo of Marine boot camp. The restructuring of the trainee's ego was based on Moon's theology that projects absolute faith in Moon as the essential building block of a "restored" personality.
It attacks the validity of the individual conscience. It explicitly denies the individual's capacity to make morally responsible existential decisions. Somewhere along the line in the theology, love of God is translated into blind obedience to Moon and his representatives in the hierarchical chain. One is finally left with submission to Moon as the only answer to fallen man's condition of moral paralysis.

The roommate remembered that the "new friends" were from a group, known by the acronym, CARP, standing for the innocuous title, Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles. After learning that CARP was "a front group" for the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church, Diglio and her husband, John's step-father, began a frantic search.
"I tried to call the church and they said they had no idea who he was."
The Diglios feared the worst, that John would be drawn into the controversial religious sect that has been accused by critics of "brainwashing" impressionable young people into becoming robotic followers of Moon as a new messiah. "When John did call," Debbie Diglio said, "I knew immediately that he was in trouble."
So began a four-year nightmare for Debbie Diglio. Like thousands of other parents in the past quarter century, she lost a child to the charismatic South Korean who teaches that his movement is building a theocracy that will rule the world. During those four years, Stacey almost completely severed ties to his family and nearly drove his mother to a nervous breakdown.

The "students" who surrounded him reinforced the messages from the speakers, while leaders of the group flattered Stacey and attended to his every need. "The seminar is completely rigged," Stacey told me. The other "students" turned out to be Unification Church members who Stacey later learned were "very well trained" in these recruitment methods.
"They gained my trust before I realized they were not worthy of it," Stacey complained. "They used the same tactics that the Chinese communists used. People don't recognize how dangerous it is because they're using mind-control techniques without prior consent. I didn't suspect that they had designs on me. ... It's like a Moonie factory. They sort of clone people there."
Stacey was not held at the Queens compound by force. Rather, he explained, the recruiters employed more subtle techniques of peer-group pressure and isolation. "When I was at that seven-day seminar, I had no idea my parents were trying to find me," he said. "For three months, I never left that property. ... I had five people patrolling me."

Once again, these are very sweeping generalities, and I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions. I do very clearly remember, however, the direction of the leaders, to look for what we called "prepared people" in our recruiting efforts, people with these qualities. The lone, young backpacker in the park didn't stand a chance! We'd practically fight over them! And if this person seemed friendly, open and divulged that he or she was concerned about the world and thinking about what they were going to do with their life, (and happened to have the weekend open), we'd be in witnessing heaven! We'd have them chalked up as spiritual children before they even made it to the center. Of course, we would do the indemnity prayer conditions anyway, just to make sure.

To the public, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon tries to appear as a benevolent, conservative religious man. What few people know or take serious is that he and his wife claim to be the "True Parents of mankind," the "Return of Christ," that his goal is to take over the world, that living as a core member of his Unification Church is a type of modern day slavery, and that families whose loved ones have joined the church live in agony and terror, because they are hardly ever allowed to see their loved ones and because they are often threatened that all contact will be cut off if they speak negatively about the church!!!

Now, if you talk to UC members of course they'll tell you a totally different story. And they may have had a different experience - but the fact is that in the organization, people are manipulated and exploited. I myself was made to work for free for 6 1/2 years - without health insurance or any benefits. If you work for the Manhattan center you may get paid at first but they'll try to make a full time member out of you ...who either doesn't get paid ("voluntary work" for the Messiah) or who returns virtually all of his earnings to the church to support "Father's" work in building the "Kingdom of Heaven." You also have to understand that yes, Moonies are VERY friendly and likeable. That's why they are so effective in recruiting people. But they are not really interested in you as an individual but only as a future member and manpower for "Father's work". They will support you ...and use you for their purposes. Of course you would be a great asset to them cause they could use your talent to represent themselves even more effectively PR wise.

Frankly, I can't keep up with them. His front group gathered 3 or so thousand in Israel in Dec. 2003,(Moon will tell you 20,000 but he is a liar) for what John Goernfeld ( http://www.gorenfeld.net ) described as, one of Moon's "famous 'move beyond the three great religions, and worship me instead!' road shows for peace."
One article, mentioned a group protesting his gathering, saying he was no friend of the Jews. They can say that again. One former member on a Moon forum, characterized it this way, "Moon believes Hitler was doing God's will when he killed the Jews because they killed Jesus."
Moon isn't anyone's friend but his own, IMHO.

Moon believes that all of the world religions have served one purpose: to prepare for God to send the sinless man to set up the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Jesus was sinless, Moon teaches, but Jesus was never able to fulfill his mission to marry and have sinless children. The Jewish people were God's chosen people, but they failed to follow Jesus, and due to people's faithlessness and sin, Jesus had to go to the cross in order to save people spiritually. Moon teaches that Jesus resurrected spiritually, not physically and that Jesus couldn't go to Heaven, until Moon married him to a Korean woman and they raised spiritual children together.
Moon teaches that you can only enter Heaven as a heterosexual couple. In Moon's world, there will be no rights for gays. Likewise, Moon taught that all children and all marriages besides those sanctioned by the Unification Church is evil. From his point of view aborting a sinful child (not a product of one of his arranged marriages) was not a sin, it was a good thing since there would be one less person to "restore". Since Moon teaches that the child is deemed spiritually alive when it takes its first breath, it sets him ideologically 180 degrees apart from the religious conservatives who oppose abortion.
Moon teaches the doctrine of indemnity. It is the belief that only by working and providing good spiritual conditions that past sins can be erased. Moon made this reference to the Holocaust in 1974.
"By killing one man, Jesus, the Jewish people had to suffer for 2000 years. Countless numbers of people have been slaughtered. During the Second World War, 6 million people were slaughtered to cleanse all the sins of the Jewish people from the time of Jesus." (MASTER SPEAKS 2/14/74)
A prominent rabbi wrote an analysis paper of the Divine Principle in the late 1970's for The American Jewish Committee and found dozens of anti-Semitic references throughout the book. As I said before, in the world that Moon wants to rule, there will not be room for any other religion beside Unificationism.

JERUSALEM, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Leaders of Judaism, Islam and Christianity will have to think beyond the capacity of their own religions if they ever hope to see an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East, say an interfaith group meeting in Jerusalem Friday.
"Religion is God's way of guiding us to recover or restore that original ideal of true love and joy," said Chung Hwan Kwak, president of the Interreligious and International Peace Council, where delegates from 36 countries, including two former heads of state met.

Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders gave gifts of a crown, Menorah, and robes to central figures of the faiths at an outdoor peace rally in Jerusalem that topped a month of community service activities in Israel and the Palestinian territories throughout December.
"The best of what God gave you, you want to give to the other," Sudanese Muslim Taj Hamad told 8,000 people at the afternoon event in Jerusalem's Independence Park on December 22.
A gesture of reconciliation between the three Abrahamic faiths, organizers said the moment was an essential catalyst for peace in the Middle East.
"Without peace between spiritual leaders and religious leaders, peace won't exist," Shuki Ben-Ami, a rally organizer and Israeli-Jew, told a press conference earlier.

Hundreds of people were bussed to the rally from around Israel to join some 3,000 others who flew in from abroad.
The day began with a peace walk through Jerusalem's Old City, led by political, academic, media, and religious leaders taking part in a conference at the Sheraton Plaza Hotel to discuss solutions to the root causes of conflict.
Israeli security forces appeared relaxed as several thousand people snaked through the narrow, twisting streets of the Christian and Jewish Quarters of East Jerusalem, to the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock shrine atop the Temple Mount.

Rev. Moon shines over capital

Jerusalem's Sacher Park was a sea of people in yellow vests printed with the slogan "A Peace UN for our Global Family" on Monday afternoon. An estimated 3,000 Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Druse clergy, political leaders and concerned citizens from 17 countries, gathered for a "Heart to Heart Rally for Peace," sponsored by the Interreligious and International Peace Council (IIPC), an affiliate of Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Church of Unification.
Among those who gathered in front of the main stage, where local entertainers and speakers welcomed participants to Israel, were Mayor Yona Yahav of Haifa, the so-called "City of Tolerance," former Indonesian president Imam Abdurrahman Wahid and the current chairman of the Islamic Center of Orange County, California, US Rep. Danny Davis and Utah Senator Howard Stephenson, Archbishop George Augustus Stallings, founding Seychelles president Sir James Mancham, and Hamilton Green, former president of Guyana.
While rally chairman Dr. Chang Shik Yang invoked the authority of Rev. Moon and energized the crowd with promises of the establishment of the "Kingdom of Peace," members of the anti-missionary Lev L'achim organization protested outside the guarded gates that enclosed the event.
"Publicly, they are all about peace, peace, peace," said one activist who preferred to remain anonymous. "But they don't tell people here that Rev. Moon's church is against the Jews."
But, according to organizer Chang, who said the event was being broadcast to about 12 million people around the world through the Internet, this is not the case. "The age of conversion is over," he said. "We have respect for each of the various faiths. Rev. Moon is working beyond all denominations for world peace.
"We must come together as one and that can only happen through true love," he continued. "True love means giving and forgetting that you gave. It means loving not only the people who are close to us, but even our enemies. If we cannot forgive, if we cannot love, we can never unite. Wherever we go, whatever we do, the message is the same: We must tear down the walls that separate us, stop the bloody violence, and put away our fears and prejudices that block the way of peace."
For Fred Jones, a Christian participant and self-described "ambassador for peace" from Dallas, Texas, it is the unifying aspect of Moon's philosophy that is appealing.
"We all believe in cultural appreciation. We are all faith-based organizations that believe in God, and this is our common ground. The differences between us are minimal, compared to what we have in common.
"The Palestinians are having a really hard time. What else do they have left to do, but fight?" continued Jones. "Then, on the Israeli side, they have been fighting somebody or someone for centuries, so I can understand why they feel like somebody is always on them. Hopefully, our presence here can make some little difference."
Local Jews and Arabs in attendance were not nearly as hopeful. "I don't think these big demonstrations really accomplish anything," said Steven Cohen, a 28-year-old Jew from Tel Aviv who happened to be visiting Jerusalem at the time of the rally.
"I don't think this event will have an impact on the peace process between the Jews and the Palestinians," agreed Amani Muhammad, a Christian Arab schoolteacher from a small village in the Galilee. "There won't be peace until Jerusalem is divided."

JERUSALEM - Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid condemned Palestinian suicide bombings Sunday at an interfaith gathering in Jerusalem designed to push the people of the region toward peace.
Wahid joined Native Americans, Israeli lawmakers, imams, American Baptists and former world leaders Sunday to kick off a peace mission to the Holy Land of about 3,000 members of a U.S.-based peace group sponsored by the founder of the Unification Church.
Started in 1999 by Korean-American evangelist Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace has founded chapters in 154 countries, encouraging peace recognizing the common points shared by religions.
About 30 members of the IIFWP opened a news conference with a peace song to the tune of a popular Israeli melody. The group - many from the American Clergy Leadership Conference - swayed and clapped in a scene reminiscent of a religious revival.
Participants called for an end to three years of violence that has taken the lives of more than 2,500 people on the Palestinian side - most in Israeli military operations - and nearly 900 on the Israeli side - half in Palestinian suicide bomb attacks.
Wahid, a member of the federation's advisory board and an imam himself, said Palestinians who have committed suicide bombings in the name of Islam during more than three years of fighting with Israel have misinterpreted the religion.
"All my life I have called on Muslims to ... be on good terms with others," said Wahid who ruled the most populous Muslim country for a year and a half, until July 2001. "It's natural for us to condemn terrorism and ... suicide bombings." Wahid, a moderate, is a longtime supporter of peace with Israel.
Indonesia has been hard hit by extremist Islamic attackers. On October 12, 2002, bombers blew up a night club on the island of Bali, killing 202 people. On August 5, an Islamic suicide bomber killed 11 bystanders at a hotel in Jakarta.
The federation did not present any Mideast peace proposals or religious statements but said members had met with several Palestinian clerics and Israeli rabbis who agreed with their cause, including Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar. They want to infuse current political efforts with a peaceful spirit, they said.
Most of the group at the news conference Sunday was American, including state legislators from Maine, New Hampshire, Arizona and Georgia. Organizers said they expect at least 3,000 members of the IIFWP, most of them Americans, to take part in a peace march at holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City on Monday.
"I'm here to tell people that there are people from all over the world who are pulling for them, praying for them," said Lois Snowe-Mello, a Republican state representative from Maine.
Members visited sites of suicide bombings in Israel and met with children in Gaza as part of the four-day symposium of the IIFWP.
Native American Chief Gayokla-Nichi Ayala of the Californian Kahwega tribe called on human beings to learn from the "crawlers and creepers who taught us songs of unity and healing ... never songs of destruction and killing each other." He was dressed in traditional leather clothing and twirled two large feathers in his hand as he spoke.

He told the gathering of international Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders on Sunday (21/12/03) that Palestinians who carry out suicide attacks in the name of Islam have misinterpreted the Koran.
"All my life I have called on Muslims to... be on good terms with others… It's natural for us to condemn terrorism and... suicide bombings," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
Wahid, who ruled Indonesia from October 1999 to July 2001, is a moderate Muslim leader and a longtime supporter of peace initiatives between Israel and Palestine.
The two-day conference of international political and religious leaders was sponsored by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP).
Founded in 1999 by Korean-American evangelist Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the IIFWP has chapters in 154 countries, encouraging world peace by recognizing the similar values shared by religions.
Moon is the leader of the Unification Church, followers of which are often widely referred to as "Moonies".
Wahid, who arrived in Israel on Friday, is a member of IIFWP's advisory board. He is also a member of Israel's Shimon Peres Foundation and the former head of Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization.
He has long called for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Indonesia, which is home to the world’s largest Muslim population and a staunch supporter of Palestinian statehood.
Wahid’s efforts to promote formal bilateral ties often earned him harsh criticism from right-wing Muslims at home, but he remains adamant that greater understanding through dialog and diplomatic relations is needed to overcome animosity and violence.
In response to those who criticize his stance on Israel, Wahid acknowledges the Koran states a good Muslim is the enemy of infidels, but he argues that Christians and Jews are not infidels because they believe in God.
Despite the absence of official diplomatic links, Israel has long maintained covert ties with Indonesia. According to some reports, Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, under the cover of a business office, has been present in Jakarta for years.
Reports say Indonesian officers have been trained in Israel in anti-terrorist methods, and intelligence agencies of both countries have been exchanging information since the late 1960s.
Former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky has said the Israeli agency is very well entrenched in Indonesia, with the knowledge and permission of the Indonesian government.
Some reports imply that Israel in the late 1980s sold 28 US-made Skyhawk fighter aircraft to Indonesia.
Anti-corruption activist George Aditjondro has written about the Suharto regime's purchase of Israeli Uzi guns and other weapons through Mossad-linked arms trader Shaul Eisenberg.
Following the signing of a peace agreement between Israel and Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization in September 1993, then Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin visited Jakarta in October 1993 as the guest of then president Suharto.
That was the last time an Israeli head of state has visited Indonesia, but informal trade continues between the two nations.
Due to trade barriers, direct bilateral trade between Indonesian and Israel stands at only about $20 million annually.
Israel is reportedly interested in buying palm oil, coffee, plywood and furniture; while Indonesia is interested in Israel’s telecommunications equipment and other high-tech products.

Former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid is to join an array of international political and religious figures in Jerusalem next week for an interfaith peace conference.
Wahid and another 3,000 delegates from around the world will attend the two-day conference, which starts with an opening banquet at the Sheraton Plaza hotel in the holy city Friday night.
Following the conference, the delegates will join hundreds of Israelis to march for peace through Jerusalem's Old City on Monday, after which there will be peace rally at Independence Park.
The interfaith conference is sponsored by the Interreligious and International Peace Council -- a body set up by Reverend Doctor Sun Myung Moon, the leader of the Unification Church, more commonly known as the "Moonies".
Wahid, who held office between 1999-2001, was due to arrive in Israel on Friday, the conference organisers told AFP.
The former Indonesian leader, who belongs to Israel's Shimon Peres Foundation, is also the former head of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia's biggest moderate Islamic group which counts more than 40 million members.
Wahid has been criticized for advocating trade and diplomatic ties with Israel.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim majority state, is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

They must be jealous of all the publicity that Yossi Beilin, Abed Rabbo, Sari Nusseibeh and Ami Ayalon have been getting with their various Middle East plans over the past few weeks. The Moonies have suddenly sprung onto the "peace" scene with a series of rallies and activity in Israel. (Are the Moonies still conducting those mass weddings somewhere in the world??)
After papering the city with flyers in Hebrew and Arabic announcing the Heart to Heart Peace Rally under the auspices of the innocuous -sounding "Inter-religious & International Federation for World Peace," the group was outed by a Jerusalem Post article revealing Rev. Sun Myung Moon as the real sponsor.
Three thousand Moon adherents (they evidently resent being called Moonies...) arrived in Israel from 70 countries to sit in the cold in Independence Park to listen to a two hour program of speeches full of platitudes, interspersed with musical selections from a Sufi Chant Ensemble, the Black Hebrew Choir of Dimona and the Gaya Band.

Organizers had hoped that 30,000 people would show up to join them, and they did their best by organizing dozens of buses full of Arabs from Nazareth and other places in the Galilee - but still, there were no more than 5-6,000 people there. The predominantly Arab crowd was dotted with a few Jewish peace activist types, but the majority of those cheering each mention of Rev. Moon were his faithful adherents all dressed in identical colored caps and vests, who had each contributed $500 of their own money to pay for the event. At least that's what spokesperson Susan Fefferman of Maryland told me in answer to a question about the budget for the event.
Fefferman claims that there are 10 Israeli activists for Moon who were ready to help carry out Moon's decision to take an active role in the Middle East, with another 80-100 here "who help out in some way." Plans call for further rallies in January and February. Leaders of the Moonie group met with Yasser Arafat in Ramallah last week, and received a gift from Yasser for Moon, she told me.
